In addition to our 3 locations for storage rooms: Waller See in Schwülper, as well as Neudammstraße and Alten-Frankfurter Straße in Braunschweig, we offer you the centrally located option of wine storage. In Alten-Frankfurter-Straße in 38122 Braunschweig, you will find our 300 square meter basement, which provides optimal climatic conditions for wine storage.
How is wine stored?
The storage of wines is significantly influenced by the type of wine closure. Wines sealed with natural cork should be stored horizontally. This is because horizontal storage prevents the cork from drying out or shrinking. Wines sealed with screw caps, glass closures, plastic stoppers, or crown caps can be stored either horizontally or upright, as there is no risk of the closure drying out or shrinking.
Shelf life of wines
Ingredients
In general, the ingredients of a wine determine its shelf life. Wines with high alcohol content, sweetness, acidity, or tannins (in the case of red wines) tend to have a longer shelf life. Noble sweet wines that have fresh acidity and high alcohol content can be stored for several decades. It’s often the case that these wines reach their full maturity after many years.
Temperature
In addition to a wine’s ingredients, temperature plays a crucial role in wine storage and its shelf life. The ideal temperature range for storing wine is between seven and fifteen degrees Celsius. Aging wine at temperatures exceeding 21 degrees Celsius accelerates the aging process, and if wine is stored for an extended period at temperatures above 25 degrees, there’s a risk that its flavor will deteriorate. Based on our experience, we consider around thirteen degrees to be the optimal temperature for wine storage.
Wines are particularly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a consistent temperature in the wine storage area is important.
Humidity
Besides ingredients and temperature, humidity is also critical for the shelf life of wines. If the air in the wine cellar is too dry, it could cause corks to dry out or allow air to enter the bottle. If the humidity is too high, it can lead to mold growth in the wine cork. As a rule of thumb, a humidity level of 50% to 80% is considered appropriate.
